Computing

Our vision for computing at St John’s is that the children will develop a high level of computational thinking and build on their creativity to understand and change the world. Sharing deep links with Mathematics, Science, and DT, computing provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.
Computer science is a fundamental part of our computing curriculum, and as such we explore the concepts of information and computation, learning how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. By building on this knowledge, the children at St John’s are able to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of context.
By ensuring that the children are digitally literate- able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology – it will prepare them for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

At St John’s, we use Rising Stars to support our Computing curriculum which is organised in a spiral, giving children multiple opportunities to revisit material so they have the best chance to build a strong schema and commit knowledge to their long-term memory. This scheme of work ensures that that all children:
● Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
● Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
● Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
● Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
We understand that each child is unique and therefore we adapt Computing teaching and learning to meet the needs of our children.
