Maths Vision at St John's
At St John’s, we recognise mathematics as a core subject and are committed to cultivating a strong foundation of fluency, understanding, and problem-solving in every child. Our vision is to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where children feel valued, supported, and encouraged to explore the wonders of mathematics with curiosity and confidence.
Guided by our core values of Love and Respect, we aim to foster not only proficiency but also a positive and respectful attitude toward mathematical challenges. Through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and a collaborative community, we strive to instil a genuine love of learning, enabling children to approach complex concepts with resilience and enthusiasm.
We use the Herts Essentials curriculum throughout the school, from EYFS up to Year 6. Our teaching embraces a mastery-based approach, underpinned by research-backed methodologies and personalised learning experiences tailored to each child’s unique needs. Through systematic progression and continuous assessment, we ensure that every child masters foundational skills before moving on to more advanced concepts, building a sense of accomplishment and self-belief along the way.
By incorporating physical manipulatives, collaborative tasks, and real-world applications, we create immersive learning experiences that empower children to apply their mathematical knowledge confidently and creatively. Our ultimate goal is to prepare every child not only for the next stage of their education but for a lifelong appreciation of mathematics, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and curiosity to thrive in an ever-changing world.
