"Growing Together in Love and Respect"

History

History vision at St John’s including the EYFS curriculum

To inspire our students to have a desire and curiosity to know about the past, and how it has impacted their present world. Students are encouraged to think and act like historians. In order to acquire the skills to become critical thinkers, and gain the confidence and understanding to investigate, weigh evidence and respectfully debate.

Our History curriculum enables students to acquire coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. To empower them with a sense of pride about their country and respect for others.

We endeavour to instill the learning of British and global history, to support the personal development of our students. We aim to enable them to openly explore various perspectives, and to gain a greater understanding of their local and wider community, Britain and the world. History is also promoted through celebrations of anniversaries and significant historical figures and events throughout each academic year.

St John's equips students with the skills to observe, compare, express their ideas, and present historical information. By taking into account our demographic, children develop knowledge about their school, town and country throughout past to present years. We teach children to communicate their Historical understanding by teaching them to use essential vocabulary and meaning.

At St John’s, we use Kapow Primary to support our History curriculum.  The Kapow Primary scheme of work encourages:

• A strong focus on developing historical knowledge and skills.

• Develop critical thinking, with the ability to ask perceptive questions, analyse evidence and explain.

• A deep interest of how past times have impacted the present in Britain and the wider world.

• A growing understanding of historical concepts, terms and vocabulary.

Whilst we use the Kapow curriculum for History at St John’s, we also understand that each child is different. Therefore, we adapt History teaching and learning to meet the needs of our children.
