"Growing Together in Love and Respect"

OUR Curriculum

At St John’s we believe that every experience is a learning opportunity.  We want our pupils to be inquisitive, inspired and independent learners.  We offer our pupils an inclusive curriculum whilst preparing them for life by equipping them with key skills, knowledge and experiences. Our curriculum design follows the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework alongside teaching and learning that supports and challenges the individual.

We believe that every child is unique and has individual skills and interests. Our aim is to provide an adaptive learning style to allow us to inspire and empower each pupil.  We also want our children to be creative thinkers. However, real creativity requires knowledge.  We want to equip our pupils with the essential knowledge they need to be flexible and innovative people.

Our curriculum is sequenced so that children can continually revisit prior learning and commit it to their long-term memory. When we introduce new learning, our curriculum allows teachers to provide strong modelling in their lessons, moving our pupils from teacher-led instruction to independent learning.  We have high expectations for all learners, ensuring that our curriculum does not provide ‘a ceiling’ for learning.  We believe that all children have the right to access and succeed in the curriculum. Therefore, we implement reasonable adjustments and adaptations to support our learners.

We are fortunate to serve a wonderfully diverse community and we want our curriculum to reflect this. Our curriculum is designed to empower children to challenge stereotypes and become truly globally aware citizens.

How do we achieve this?

We strive to create a safe and exciting environment which inspires children to want to develop life-long positive attitudes to school and to learning without limits.

Our curriculum has been carefully selected aiming to provide imaginative and impactful schemes of work that teachers enjoy teaching and children love learning about.  We provide a spiral curriculum across all subjects which is well-planned, sequenced and ambitious for our children. We ensure we build upon children’s prior experiences and prior learning by providing first-hand experiences. This allows the children to grow personally and socially, to build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers who thrive morally and spiritually throughout their St John’s experience.

We monitor children’s progress and development carefully so that new skills and ideas can be introduced as soon as a child is ready to progress to the next stage of learning. Our children will be supported in individual ways to ensure they progress to the best of their abilities and we aim to ensure that every child has access and entitlement to a broad, balanced curriculum.
